November / December Reading Workshop

Kindergarten Reader’s Workshop
Unit 4
November into December

Through the month of November and in the beginning of December kindergarteners will be learning to read pattern books.
The following is a list of big goals in this unit:

  • ·      Recognize a pattern across a book and use the pattern to help read all the pages in the book.
  • ·      Use the word wall words to help read the book.
  • ·      Point and read with one to one match with each word on the page.
  • ·      Look at the first letter and the picture to help read new or unfamiliar words.
  • ·      Monitor themselves as they read by checking the pictures and the letters in the words to make sure the word looks right, sounds right and makes sense.
  • ·      When they finish reading a book retell what the whole book was about.
Ways you can help at home:

·      Have your child read for 15 minutes each night
·      Remind them to point under each word in a pattern book
·      Review the word wall words by writing them on index cards and having your child read each word.  The word wall words that will be taught through the month include:

November Writer's Workshop

Unit 3: Pattern Writing and Writing for Readers

The purpose of this writing unit is to support our students as they move into conventional reading. In this unit the students are invited to write multiple pattern books similar to the ones that we will be reading in class. They will do it in the following ways:

                             * Students will practice one to one correspondence as they write as they write sentences with spacing .
                              * They will create their own reading material.
                              * They will create pattern books, similar to A,B,C leveled books.
                              * They will use their sight word knowledge to write one and eventually two sentences on a page.
*They will use their letter sound knowledge to write words that include the initial , medial and final sounds in words.

November Reader's Workshop

Reader’s Workshop Unit 3
November
Wordless and Unfamiliar Books

This is a short reading unit (2 weeks long) meant to transition readers from emergent reading into conventional reading.  In this reading unit, the children are expected to apply what they learned about story language, story structure and overall comprehension to “read” wordless and unfamiliar picture books.  Overall, this unit provides the children with an opportunity to further strengthen their comprehension skills before focusing on word solving in the next several units coming up.

Unit Goals:
·      Students will demonstrate an understanding of story elements, structure and language by “reading” wordless and unfamiliar texts.
·      Students will transfer their knowledge of emergent reading to wordless books.
·      Students will work with their partners in order to strengthen their understanding of story language and story elements.

November Math Workshop

In November/December ,Kindergarten teachers and students will begin Module 2 of the Engage NY Math Curriculum. They will extend their knowledge of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes.

Here are some terms, phrases, and strategies used in this Module:
  •  Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by counting.
  • Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to.
  • Identify shapes as two-dimensional (lying in a plane, “flat”) or three-dimensional (“solid”). Students will also analyze and compare these shapes in different sizes and orientations to describe their similarities and differences.
Here are some new vocabulary words that will be introduced during this unit:
Above, below, beside, in front of, next to, behind (positional words)
·      Circle
·      Face (flat side of a solid)
·      Hexagon (flat figure enclosed by six straight sides)
·      Rectangle (flat figure enclosed by four straight sides)
·      Square (flat figure enclosed by four straight, equal sides)
·      Triangle (flat figure enclosed by three straight sides)
·      Flat (two-dimensional shape)
·      Solid (three-dimensional shape)
·      Cone (three-dimensional shape)
·      Cube (three-dimensional shape)
·      Cylinder (three-dimensional shape)

How you can help at home:
·      Identify objects at home that are different shapes and ask questions regarding the objects (e.g. what makes this a square?).

·      Have students assist in setting the table before meal time and practice positional concepts (e.g. Put the spoon next to the plate.

·      Continue practicing counting and number identification skills.
