October-Themed Math and Literacy Centers in K-105!

In K-105, we had fun in October-themed Math and Literacy Centers!

Estefany and Kratos are playing “Candy Corn Counting”.  First, they lined up the pumpkins in order from #1-10.  Then, they took pieces of candy corn and matched the correct number of pieces to each numeral.  This game is great for practicing one-to-one correspondence and number identification.

Jeancarlos and Brandon had fun playing the same game!

In the next few pictures, you can see partners working together to play “Jack-o-Latern match”, another fun math game.  This game is great for developing the ability to match a numeral to a set of objects.  The pieces fit together like a puzzle, which makes it easy for the students to self-assess their own work.

Yalitza and Ayah are playing “Pumpkin sounds”.  They turn over a card and identify the letter.  Then, they make the sound that the letter makes.

Alex is doing an awesome job at practicing correct letter formation on the i-Pad.

Damien enjoys using Wet-Dry-Try, an app that helps with proper letter formation.

Elijah is also doing a great job with letter formation.

We hope you enjoyed our pictures!  Please feel free to request any of these games if you would like to play them at home ;)

October Writing Workshop

Writing Workshop: Unit 2   We Are Authors!!

The purpose of this unit includes teaching students the importance of sharing information as a real life reason for writing. This unit provides an opportunity for students to sort and categorize objects, build vocabulary, improve drawing skills and label and write a simple sentence.
In this unit, children will build their vocabulary as they visit the schoolyard and places in the community and use the words they learn there in their whole class and small group discussions.
You can help your child at home by talking about and naming the things they see in their classroom, in their bedroom or any places you might visit together.  As you name the objects you see or discuss, ask your child to think about the beginning sound of the word you are discussing.

October Math Workshop

During the month of October, kindergarten teachers and students will be working together to complete the first module of the Engage NY Math program.

Students will count, order, and draw up to ten objects, with particular emphasis on numbers six through ten.  They will eventually work toward an understanding that each successive number names a quantity that is 1 more, and that the number before is 1 less.

Here are some terms, phrases, and strategies used in this Module:

  • Students work on analyzing objects to match or sort and describe those objects as being...Exactly the same, not exactly the same or the same.
  • Students  practice writing numerals from 0-10.
  • Answer “how many” when counting quantities or sets
  • Understand and then tell a number story: stories with "add to" or "take from" situations.
  • Students will understand the meaning of, write and recognize zero
  • Number sentence: 3 = 2 + 1
  • 1 more/1 less: e.g., (six is 1 more is five, and four is 1 less than five)
  • 5-group (see below)

How you can help at home:
• Have your student practice counting groups of objects in his/her environment
• In addition to counting, students can practice writing the numerals 0-10
• Practice decomposing numbers, e.g. talk about how 5 is made up of a group of 2 and a group of 3

October Word Study

We are continuing to play the “Star Name Game” during word study until mid October.  Students are continuing to recognize the letters in their names as well as the names of their classmates.  They are getting familiar with how many syllables each name has and comparing them to their classmates’.  It’s also a great way to compare the amount of letters they have in their name and gives them the opportunity to have one to one match as they count the letters in a name.

Towards the end of October in Word Study, we will begin learning the letters of the alphabet, one-by-one.  This includes learning how to correctly form lowercase and uppercase letters, producing the sounds that each letter makes, and thinking of words that begin with that letter.

During handwriting, we will remember to:
  • ·      Notice when a letter is a small letter (a, c, u)
  • ·      Notice when a letter is a tall letter (t, l, h)
  • ·      Notice when a letter is a diver letter (g, y, j)
  • ·      Start our letters at the top!
During homework time, once we begin learning the letters in isolation, your child will be getting worksheets that reflect the letter they learned that day.  They will have an opportunity to practice writing it or practice it with the sound.

October Reader's Worskshop

October Reader's Workshop
Emergent Reading Unit
(September 28th-October 30th)

This reading unit teaches children story language and
story structure.  The children will learn to love familiar books and build thinking and conversation
around books.  They will use their memory of repeated
readings, their knowledge of story language
and story structure, and illustrations to “read” familiar books.

For reading homework your child should read the books they bring home.  They should look at the pictures and read the book from memory while using story language.  If your child gets stuck, remind them to look closely at the pictures and say what the character is doing.  Please record the book your child reads each night on their reading log in their homework folder.  Please make sure your child returns their book each day in order to bring a new book home each day.
