Introduction
to Word Wall Words
Dear
Parents,
As you know, Kindergarten is a very important time in a
child’s life. They will leave in June
with a solid foundation of reading and writing skills that will set them up for
success as they move to the upper grades.
The acquisition of sight words, or as we refer to them, “word wall
words”, is essential in helping to develop this foundation. Sight words are words that are used
frequently in language and often cannot be sounded out phonetically. Memorizing these words and knowing them “by
sight” will allow your child to automatically recognize the words without
having to use strategies to decode them. The ability to read and write sight
words will help the students to begin conventional reading in leveled books as
well as use complete sentences in their writing.
Attached is a list of sight words that
your child will be expected to both read and write by the end of kindergarten. We
are including this list so that throughout the year, you can work with your
child on memorizing these words little by little. A monthly schedule of words
will be sent home at a later time. Please note that your child is not expected to memorize these words all
at once. In fact, trying to memorize
too many at once may result in confusion and frustration. Each word is introduced in isolation and the complexity of the
words will gradually increase as the year goes on. If, however, you notice that
your child can read and write all the sight words for a given month, you may
want to introduce them to the next month’s words. The students will be tested on their ability
to read and write these words periodically throughout the year.
Here are some fun things that you can do
with your child to help them learn the sight words, especially if the are
having difficulty doing so:
· Spread shaving cream on a tray
or table and write the word in the cream.
· Write the word in glue and pour
sand over it. Trace the word with your
finger.
· Trace the word into a carpet or
in the air.
· Cheer the word (t!- h! -e!
the!)
· Form each letter of the word
with play dough.
· Form each letter of the word
with a pipe cleaner and trace the word with your finger.
· Make rainbow words: Write the word in black marker and then trace
the word 3-4 times, using a different color crayon each time.
· Word Wall Ring Cards
