During the month of October, kindergarten teachers and students will be working together to complete the first module of the Engage NY Math program.
Students will count, order, and draw up to ten objects, with particular emphasis on numbers six through ten. They will eventually work toward an understanding that each successive number names a quantity that is 1 more, and that the number before is 1 less.
Here are some terms, phrases, and strategies used in this Module:
- Students work on analyzing objects to match or sort and describe those objects as being...Exactly the same, not exactly the same or the same.
- Students practice writing numerals from 0-10.
- Answer “how many” when counting quantities or sets
- Understand and then tell a number story: stories with "add to" or "take from" situations.
- Students will understand the meaning of, write and recognize zero
- Number sentence: 3 = 2 + 1
- 1 more/1 less: e.g., (six is 1 more is five, and four is 1 less than five)
- 5-group (see below)
How you can help at
home:
• Have your student practice counting groups of objects in his/her environment
• In addition to counting, students can practice writing the numerals 0-10
• Practice decomposing numbers, e.g. talk about how 5 is made up of a group of 2 and a group of 3
