Kindergarten Reader’s Workshop 

Unit 4 

November into December

Through the month of November and in the beginning of December kindergarteners will be learning to read pattern books.  
The following is a list of big goals in this unit:

• ·      Recognize a pattern across a book and use the pattern to help read all the pages in the book.
• ·      Use the word wall words to help read the book.
• ·      Point and read with one to one match with each word on the page.
• ·      Look at the first letter and the picture to help read new or unfamiliar words.
• ·      Monitor themselves as they read by checking the pictures and the letters in the words to make sure the word looks right, sounds right and makes sense.
• ·      When they finish reading a book retell what the whole book was about.

Ways you can help at home:

·      Have your child read for 15 minutes each night

·      Remind them to point under each word in a pattern book

·      Review the word wall words by writing them on index cards and having your child read each word.  The word wall words that will be taught through the month include:
