In November/December ,Kindergarten teachers and students will begin Module 2 of the Engage
NY Math Curriculum. They will extend their knowledge of two-dimensional and
three-dimensional shapes.
Here are some terms, phrases, and strategies used
in this Module:
- Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by counting.
- Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to.
- Identify shapes as two-dimensional (lying in a plane, “flat”) or three-dimensional (“solid”). Students will also analyze and compare these shapes in different sizes and orientations to describe their similarities and differences.
Above, below, beside, in front of, next to, behind (positional
words)
· Circle
· Face (flat side of a solid)
· Hexagon (flat figure enclosed by six straight sides)
· Rectangle (flat figure enclosed by four straight sides)
· Square (flat figure enclosed by four straight, equal sides)
· Triangle (flat figure enclosed by three straight sides)
· Flat (two-dimensional shape)
· Solid (three-dimensional shape)
· Cone (three-dimensional shape)
· Cube (three-dimensional shape)
· Cylinder (three-dimensional shape)
How you can help at home:
· Identify objects at home that are different shapes and ask questions
regarding the objects (e.g. what makes this a square?).
· Have students assist in setting the table before meal time and
practice positional concepts (e.g. Put the spoon next to the plate.
· Continue practicing counting and number identification skills.
